The truth is that when these drugs are taken for non-medical purposes, they can be addictive and highly dangerous. Unfortunately, there are a number of different types of prescription drugs that are commonly abused today.

Prescription drugs that are commonly abused fall into the following categories:

  • Central Nervous System Depressants – Valium, Xanax
  • Opioids (painkillers) – Vicodin, Oxycodone, morphine
  • Stimulants – Ritalin, Adderall, Dexadrine

Prescription Drug Effects

The effects of prescription drugs vary, based on the type of drug that is abused. However, all of these drugs can lead to tolerance (needing more of the drug to get the same effect) and uncomfortable withdrawal symptoms if the user suddenly stops taking the drug. Because of their addictive tendencies, all prescription drugs taken for non-medical reasons can lead to addiction and the need for professional treatment to get off the drugs for good.
